Three generations, one garden

Fifty years ago, Charly started transforming a wasteland site into a paradise. It is a labor of love and a lifelong project that Charly’s son-in-law Florian and grandson Maximilian are also growing into. Every day, here in this enchanted and secluded spot, all three generations experience a connection to nature as well as to their families. From a garden that was never meant to be.

Charly calls his enchanted garden in the Upper Palatinate, Germany a “designed landscape.”

Even though it might not appear that way at first glance, Charly’s garden needs attention and care every day. However, at 70 years old, Charly now finds it increasingly difficult to trim hedges or prune trees. Luckily his son-in-law is getting more and more involved. He has got to know a great deal about the garden in recent years.

An enchanted space

“Florian takes care of everything with the power tools,” Charly says, looking visibly comforted. The same goes for the sheep. And the vegetable beds. Above all, Florian is responsible for ensuring light comes in through the green foliage at the right spots – a task that sometimes calls for a pole pruner and a battery-powered chainsaw.

For Maximilian, Grandpa’s garden is primarily an adventure playground; an enchanted space full of secrets and opportunities for playful exploration. Just like his father and grandfather, when the three-year-old is here he engages with and discovers his bonds with nature. So it is not only majestic trees and rare plants that thrive in this garden, in harmony with the seasons, but also multiple generations of a family that make their mark on this unique green space.
